I just finished watching the movie “Rescue Dawn” starring Christain Bale. It is an amazing story of survival about a man named Dieter Dengler that I would really rank up there with Miracle in the Andes or the story of Ernest Shackleton. These are my favorite types of tales because they are so absolutely ridiculous that if you made one up people would laugh in your face.
If I can, I hope to tell you about the movie one day, but I encourage you to rent it for yourself. Something powerful was said by legendary director Werner Herzog in the special features part of the dvd (I love the speacial features as much as the movie) that I couldn’t wait to tell you.
Herzog felt like he really nailed the casting in this film. I agree. It required a collection of characters that could really be pushed to the limit and they were all brilliant. Thinking about the casting, Herzog said,
“I never make casting errors. It’s fundamental to the success of the film. If you can’t get casting down, your films will never work.”
When I heard this, the leadership implications really hit me. Having the right people (cast) at the table for any project you may be leading is, plain and simple, fundamental to the success of that project. Get the wrong cast and accidental success may happen, but get the right cast and the likelihood of success has multiplied.
