So, my wife and kids were amped all day yesterday about getting a free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cone. I kid you not, when we made it to Ben & Jerry’s yesterday (a tiny store in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood), I saw the line from a distance. I was shocked, because I could tell from the car that a few people were waiting in line for their ice cream cone.
However, the close we got, the longer the line appeared. We didn’t have time to snap a photo, but we saw at least 150-200 people in line, stretched down a few blocks, waiting for their free ice cream cone. Black, brown, white, rich, young, old, homeless, kids, babies in strollers, grunge, punk, hip-hop, business suits – I saw it all. No joke! It was wild. We ended up going to Whole Foods and buying overpriced desserts.
I wonder if the recession has anything to do with that long line? I bet so.
